Day 3 - Enina Apostolos

In this lesson, we will learn one of the most important phenomena of all Slavic languages, which is palatalization. It affected the velars г, к, х and has its consequences in all modern Slavic languages, so we will be able to discover one of the interesting phonetic processes. Besides, of course, we will read the Enina Apostle (Enina Apostolos, Енинский апостол), an 11th-century lectionary manuscript. The grammar that will be examined this day provides information about the Old Slavonic verb, its classes in Old Slavonic, and also the verb “быти” (‘to be’).

Phonetics:

- phoneme Ѣ (yat`), its origin and usage in the text;

- diphthong vowels И and Ѣ, their origin and usage;

- 1 palatalization of the velars г, к, х;

- 2 palatalization of the velars г, к, х.

Grammar:

- classes of verbs (athematic, thematic);

- verb быти (to be).

Reading: The Enina Apostle (Enina Apostolos, Енинский апостол).
