Day 4 - Jalal ad-Din Rumi: Mathnavi-e Maanavi

Jalal al-Din Rumi is one the most prominent figures of classical Persian literature. His works have been translated into numerous languages and are read worldwide. His most famous work is entitled Mathnawi-e Maanavi (“Spiritual Couplets”). It has widely influenced mystical thought and literature throughout the Islamic world. It is a masterpiece of Persian literature and studying it is a requirement for every true student of the Persian language and literature.

Rumi’s Mathnawi-e Ma’navi continues to inspire readers and scholars around the world, far beyond its original historical and cultural context. In this section, students will discuss how Rumi's work is received and interpreted in modern times. Students are encouraged to do some research on the contemporary reception of Rumi, including translations, adaptations, and the role his poetry plays in today's discussions around spirituality, identity, and intercultural dialogue.
