Day 1 - Iran-Iraq War

Today, we are going to discuss a crucial period in modern Iranian history, which not only played an important role in shaping the modern Iranian state ideology, but also part of the identity of modern Iranians. The Iran-Iraq war also had extensive economical, humanitarian and military implications on the Iranian society, which still affect the Iranian policies in the Middle East. Through selected materials, students will become familiar with the official discourse, terminology, and framing commonly used in official discourse in Iran when addressing this topic.

Reading: In the following page, you will find a brief summary of how the Iran-Iraq war began, published on the official website of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution. Its vocabulary is necessary for understanding the rhetoric of the ruling circles of Iran on the Iran-Iraq war.

Listening: This is an interview with the former Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC during the Iran-Iraq war mostly focusing on Qasem Soleymani, regional politics and the Iran-Iraq war.

Subject of Conversation: The influence of the Iran-Iraq war on the Iran-West diplomatic relations (تاثیر جنگ ایران و عراق بر روابط سیاسی ایران و کشورهای غربی)

They will discuss the war’s long-term political and psychological impact on Iran’s foreign policy, including themes such as distrust, self-reliance, and resistance.
